This is an odd photograph which needs some explanation. You could stand on a beach for a very long time before seeing waves that look like this. And if you blink (and maybe even if you don't) you'll miss it. It happens when a strong incoming wave meets a strong backwash from its predecessor. It was shot at 1/15 and may not have been visible at all with a slower speed , and may have looked different with a notably faster speed.
